Meet our people

Jane and Roger Wilson both have a background in research and development in the animal health industry. Winkwell Rare Breeds was started in 1977 with Dexter cattle and gradually developed until a move to a hill farm in the Northumberland National Park in 1990 enabled a greater focus to be made on breed development and developing the use of rare and traditional breeds in conservation grazing and meat products. Currently we keep the following rare and traditional breeds:
- Whitebred Shorthorn cattle
- Hebridean sheep
- Llanwenog sheep
- Golden Guernsey goats
- Exmoor ponies
These breeds are all particularly suited to the famous open moorland landscapes of the Northumberland National Park.
